The Protection of Traditional Knowledge: Draft Articles. This text represents the results at the conclusion of the IGC’s 21st session, in accordance with the mandate of the WIPO General Assemblies (contained in WO/GA/40/7). It represents a work in progress.
The concept of intellectual property right is becoming important at the global level. During the last few decades all over the world after the establishment of WTO & GATT protection of intellectual property has become one of the central issues.
It is a well known fact that in the ancient time the global economy was highly dominated by the agriculture sector. Later, it has been taken over by the industrial sector, particularly the manufacturing sector; the might of the economy was judged by the industrial capacity of the nation.
The current international system for protecting intellectual property was fashioned during the age of industrialization in the West and developed subsequently in line with the perceived needs of technologically advanced societies. However, in recent years, indigenous peoples, local communities, and governments, mainly in developing countries, have demanded equivalent protection for traditional knowledge system
